MINING IN MONGOLIA
Mongolia has become in 2013 the fastest growing economy in the world.
Sitting on vast quantities of untapped mineral wealth, the country has just recently opened its doors to foreign investments in a number of massive mining projects.
This is leading not only to a rapid change in the country's economic and social fabric, but also to an irreversible transformation of the territory.
The two main subjects of this transformation are the big mining industries and the illegal miners, also called ninja miners. Ninja miners are usually nomads who remake themselves gold miners.
The mining industries work in large scale and dig entire areas that often used to be pastures lands. The illegal miners mostly look for gold in the bottom of extinguished mines or in new areas where they dig completely unregulated underground tunnels to extract some grain of gold that most times is spent in alcohol.
Often happens that mining industries claim areas previously excavated by illegal miners and contrasts between the two parties are on the agenda.
